By the look of it Lew he's had hydro lock on the second bore but I can't say for sure as I can't zoom in on the con rod/piston and big ends I would also like to be able to see the condition of the valves and spark plugs could possibly be oil starvation but other con rods and big end surfaces look in good condition so I will stick with hydro lock by the carbon build up on pistons it's ran to rich and had too much fuel in 2nd cylinder and was timing out and exhaust valve has stayed shut or possible that it's been ran too lean and plug may have melted, what is that component that's in bits next to the oil pick up?

Just incase anyone is interested the owner of the MT09 has posted a cracking set of photgraphs showing the stripped down engine here is the link.

Reflashed ecu?  Im guessing he is now wishing he would have not raised the rev limiter.

Yamahas 79 xs 750/850 made abotu 60 hp and weighed a hundred pounds more than this modern mt09 engine.  Modern mt makes an extra 40 hp over that.

Part of making it so light, and powerful,  is the conrod is the size of  a toothbrush, and they wont tolerate abuse like we could do in the past.

Looks like the conrod had a manufacturer fault and was cracked for some time, the rest is damage following the snap off. Maybe !!
