When you got your bike if you didn't adjust the gear shift lever so that its resting on your foot top when your foot is relaxed on the foot peg, then you need to do that and try the gear shifts again.

This is my tenth bike and that's the first time anyone has passed on that advice.  Cheers for that.  Will get it adjusted.
