Nikwax...what's it made of?
« on: January 06, 2017, 05:51:23 PM »
I bought a small bottle of Nikwax wash in waterproofer for my textiles today for £8.
It looks and smells like normal PVA or Unibond which is available from builders merchants for about a quarter of the price!
Does anyone know what it"s made of? There are no clues on the bottle. Are we being conned? Surely not?

I'm guessing it has some sort of wax in it :027:

Nice one Mitch, EVA.......sounds like PVA!!! not far off I'm sure but I won't risk washing my Gortex stuff in Unibond ! :008:

:008:  It's really good stuff a couple of mates do a lot of country, wildlife work and survival training and they swear by it but they say you have to use the cleaner before the waterproofing or it doesn't work very well so basically you wash your gear with normal detergent then wash with the Nikwax cleaner to prep and strip out the detergent then wash in the waterproofing bit of a faff on but they say it's worth it doesn't let any water in and there's different types for other gear like boots, leathers and even sleeping bags  :087:

Yeah, bit of a pain like you said, but Gortex and the like need regular washing to perform, otherwise you are wasting money on expensive kit thats not doing its job i.e. breathing!
